African American Art: From Oppression to Free Expression

This presentation seeks to demonstrate how African American artists have risen up to make their voices heard despite adversity and oppression. We begin with anti-slavery art by white artists in the Antebellum period, as well as art that reinforced stereotypes during the World Columbian Exposition. Coming into the 20th century, the focus is on major African American art movements and individual artists. We conclude with contemporary African American art in the 21st century. Instructor: Denise Laurin-Donatelle
