In the 1890s, ragtime became popular because of one person – Scott Joplin. His music set the stage for other ragtime composers. Blues originated with slave work songs and sacred music. Blues musicians represented include Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, W.C. Handy and Louis Armstrong. Presented by classical music enthusiast, Bob Levi. Light refreshments will be served.
