Please join us for discussion and conversation of Lincoln in the Bardo. President Lincoln’s eleven-year-old son Willie dies just a year into the Civil War and is buried in a cemetery in Georgetown. Lincoln returns alone to the crypt to spend time with his boy’s body. This is a historical fact and is the jumping off point for a story that is an unforgettable story of familial love and loss that breaks free of its realistic, historical framework into a supernatural realm both hilarious and terrifying. Willie finds himself in a strange purgatory where ghosts mingle, gripe, commiserate, quarrel, and enact bizarre acts of penance. This transitory realm is the bardo of Tibetan tradition.
