Poplar Creek Library Book Discussion: The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane by Lisa See
Thursday, August 8
10:15 - 11:45 A.M.
Join us for discussion of Lisa See’s book, The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane. Li-yan and her family, part of the Akha people, an ethnic minority in China, align their lives around the seasons and the farming of tea. There is ritual and routine, and it has been ever thus for generations. Even though the ritual is ancient, the story is set in modern time. Then one day a jeep appears at the village gate, the first automobile any of them have seen and a stranger arrives. Li-yan becomes pregnant at 17 and not married. Li-yan rejects the tradition that would compel her to give the child over to be killed, and instead leaves her, wrapped in a blanket with a tea cake tucked in its folds, at an orphanage in a nearby city. Light refreshments will be provided. Registration required.
